Birmingham, Ala. — Vulcan Park and Museum announces the unveiling of “Vulcans on Parade,” a concept of the young professional community of Birmingham. Join us, along with Mayor William Bell and other community leaders, as we unveil this civic art project on Wednesday, August 26 at 8:15 a.m. at Railroad Park.

“Vulcans on Parade” is the brainchild of a team of young professionals participating in the 2015 Project Corporate Leadership class. This program brings together young, local leaders to learn how to become more involved in the community and to focus on becoming leaders of tomorrow.

The team’s idea was simple: choose a symbol that represents and unifies all of Birmingham, build miniature replicas of that image, have them painted by local artists, and place them at sites to showcase Birmingham’s history and local attractions. This innovative outdoor art exhibit is a great way for our city to attract tourism dollars while bringing more awareness to our cultural institutions.

Two painted replicas of Vulcan will be placed in downtown Birmingham; one temporarily at Railroad Park and the other at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. The statues are eight feet tall and weigh around 100 pounds. Local artists Paul Cordes Wilm and Carrie McGrann completed the artwork celebrating the Birmingham metro area.

This pilot project was structured to kick off a series of “mini-vulcans” around the metro area. The goal is to have 20 statues in place throughout the area over the next year.
