Vulcan Park and Museum and Jefferson County Board of Education Partner to Provide Unique Educational Opportunity for International Baccalaureate Students

Birmingham, Ala. – Vulcan Park and Museum and the Jefferson County Board of Education will once again join forces to offer a unique opportunity for the students of the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School (JCIB). On Thursday, October 26, students, faculty and parents from the two campuses will come together to experience a variety of Vulcan Park and Museum’s educational opportunities all in one evening.

This experience will be a great chance for the participants to get to know each other all while visiting Birmingham’s most unique cultural attraction. Guided tours by the museum’s trained docents will be offered to the group every 20 minutes from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. for a special entry fee of only $1 per person.

The JCIB Diploma Programme serves grades 11-12 and has been authorized since 1991. The Middle Years Programme, currently in its candidacy phase, serves students in grades 6-10. The Shades Valley campus houses students in grades 9-12 and the Pleasant Grove campus houses students in grades 6-8. The JCIB is designed to accomodate the needs of all students while encouraging them to become creative, critical, and inquiry-based thinkers. This program connects classroom studies with hands-on, real-world experiences. Community service and a global focus are also major initiatives of this program.

Educational opportunities at Vulcan Park and Museum reflect the hands-on, experiential mission of the IB program.

Vulcan Park and Museum, the only museum in the area that offers a comprehensive history of the Birmingham region, operates with an educational mission to preserve and promote Vulcan as the symbol for the Birmingham region, to advance knowledge and understanding of Birmingham’s history and culture, and to encourage exploration of the region. Tours for students of all ages are educational, interactive, and fun.

This special event is not open to the public. However, opportunities are available for more special educational events. Guided tours and school field trips are available year-round and can be scheduled through Vulcan Park and Museum’s education department by calling 205.933.1409 x.114 or by emailing fieldtrips@visitvulcan.com.
