25th Annual Brent Newman Egg Drop Competition Exploring the Use of Science and Engineering at Vulcan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Birmingham, AL – On Friday, April 11, approximately 566 students from schools around the area will demonstrate a creative use of science and engineering through an Egg Drop Contest at Vulcan® Park and Museum. Elementary, middle, and high school students are invited to participate, free of charge.

Vulcan Park and Museum is proud to partner with the UAB Student Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers to present the 25th Annual Brent Newman Memorial Egg Drop Contest. The competition presents a simple but daunting challenge: invent a way to safely land an egg dropped from Vulcan Tower on the ground 100 feet below. The students will be using 289 devices that they have designed to keep their egg intact.

Besides the egg drop itself, students will be treated to science and engineering demonstrations devised by UAB students and hands-on, minds-on tours of Vulcan Park and Museum outlining the city’s history of technology and innovation.

The Brent Newman Memorial Egg Drop Contest takes place at Vulcan Park and Museum on April 11, 2014. The competition is offered free of charge to students grades K-12.
