Event Ties into Current Exhibition, “From Steel to Stage,” Showcasing the City’s Theatrical Legacy
BIRMINGHAM, AL – Vulcan Park & Museum invites the public to attend Preserving Birmingham: How We Saved Our Historic Theatres and How You Can, Too, a special panel discussion taking place Thursday, June 26, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
This event will highlight the successful preservation of several of Birmingham’s most treasured historic theatres, including The Alabama, The Carver, The Lyric, and The Famous. Attendees will hear firsthand from experts and advocates who helped rescue these landmarks through a combination of design innovation, community organizing, and funding strategies.
Panelists include Glenny Brock of the Light Up the Lyric Campaign and The Lincoln Theatre; architect and preservationist Nolanda Hatcher of Studio 2H Design and owner of the former Famous Theatre; Traci Jones of the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument; and Cindy Mullins, executive director of Birmingham Landmarks. Cheryl Morgan, FAIA, emerita professor and former director of Auburn Urban Studio, will moderate the discussion.
“We are proud to host a meaningful conversation that goes beyond preserving buildings; it’s about preserving the artistic legacy of our city,” said Casey Gamble, curator of collections and exhibitions at Vulcan Park & Museum. “These theatres reflect Birmingham’s evolution through art, architecture, and activism, and we’re excited to spotlight the people ensuring these stories continue to be told.”
The event complements Vulcan Park & Museum’s current exhibition, From Steel to Stage: The History of Theatre in Birmingham, which explores how the performing arts helped transform the city from a gritty industrial center into a vibrant cultural hub. On view through January 11, 2026, the exhibition showcases artifacts, photographs, and stories from the collection, alongside contributions from Red Mountain Theatre, Birmingham Children’s Theatre, UAB Archives, and other organizations.
Light refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar will be available.
