Birmingham, Ala. – In partnership with Vulcan Park & Museum, Selena Rodgers Dickerson is proud to announce the unveiling ceremony of the fifteenth Vulcans on Parade on May 9 at 10:30a.
Painted by local artist Erica Chisolm, the statue will be located at i3 Academy, located at 230 49th Street North in Birmingham.
The i3 Academy hosted statue will be named “S.O.A.R,” an acronym used in the school’s social-emotional learning program to encourage students to be Safe, to be On task, to go Above and beyond and to be Respectful. The mission of i3 Academy is to empower students to be agents of change for the problems they see in their world.
Selena Rodgers Dickerson states, “As they pass this statue, entering the elementary school each day, students will be reminded of the possibilities around and ahead of them. i3 Academy comprises of the three Is—imagine, investigate, innovate. These concepts plus Vulcan’s posture, pointing to the sky, convey the idea that i3 Academy students will SOAR in life, propelling Birmingham into a bright future.”
Selena Rodgers Dickerson and Vulcan Park Foundation have a long-standing relationship dating back to 2000. Selena is not only a member of Vulcan Park Foundation’s executive board but also chair’s the foundation’s Community Engagement Committee. Dickerson is also a board member of i3 Academy and parent to a first grader attending i3 Academy.
Corbin Ellard, Vulcan Park and Museum Junior Leadership Board Chair is excited for the community to see the latest statute.
“As Project Manager for this Vulcan on Parade statue, I was blown away at the culture of i3.” Ellard states. “The sense of support and togetherness is extremely evident as soon as you step foot on campus. i3 is an excellent representation of the Birmingham community and the purpose for the VOP Project.”
The unveiling is free and open to the public but will also broadcast live on Vulcan Park & Museum’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
Vulcans on Parade is a community art project led by Vulcan’s Junior Leadership Board. It began as the brainchild of a team of young professionals participating in the 2015 Project Corporate Leadership class. Additional Vulcans on Parade locations include Railroad Park, BJCC, Kinetic Communications, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Birmingham Zoo, PropHouse Event Rentals, Birmingham-Southern College, Pizitz Food Hall Courtyard, Magic City Dentistry, Oak Mountain Elementary School, Redmont Distilling, Maynard-Cooper and Liverpool, England.
