Honoring Vulcan’s Place in History: National Register Historic Marker Unveiling at Vulcan Park & Museum

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Vulcan Park & Museum will host a special ceremony on Friday, October 10, at 10:00 AM to unveil a new historic marker recognizing Vulcan’s place on the National Register of Historic Places, a distinction first granted in 1976 by the National Park Service.

Although Vulcan has held this designation for nearly 50 years, sites are responsible for securing and funding their own signage to mark the honor. With support from a grant by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, Vulcan Park & Museum has now installed an official historic marker that celebrates this important recognition.

“This moment has been nearly half a century in the making,” said Cynthia Cardona, President & CEO of Vulcan Park & Museum. “The historic marker is more than a sign; it is a powerful reminder of Vulcan’s place in our city’s story, our state’s history, and our nation’s cultural heritage. We are proud to finally share this recognition with the public in a way that is visible and lasting.”

The unveiling ceremony is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to join the celebration and explore the Park & Museum following the event.

This milestone adds to Vulcan’s legacy as the world’s largest cast iron statue and a symbol of Birmingham’s enduring spirit.
