Birmingham named one of the top 24 places to travel worldwide in 2026 by AFAR Media

AFAR sees the Magic City as “a Southern hub hungry for the title of top U.S. food city” and they’re not wrong. From Birmingham’s recent Michelin Guide recognition (including Pardis Stitt’s Outstanding Service Award) to Bayonet landing on The New York Times’ “50 Best Places in America Right Now” list, our culinary scene is shining brighter than ever.

“This recognition from one of the travel industry’s most trusted media outlets ,” said Dan Williams, GBCVB President and CEO.

“In particular, that Birmingham’s food scene stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the country and around the world. Coming off the success of the Southbound Food Festival and 11 of our restaurants earning Michelin recognition, this honor adds yet another layer of credibility to our region’s culinary story. It also strengthens our ability to welcome an even broader audience of food-minded travelers while continuing to drive meaningful economic impact to the region.”

Where to stay? AFAR highlights two of Magic City’s gems: The Painted Lady and The Elyton Hotel – Birmingham, each bringing their own blend of style, history, and unforgettable hospitality.

The AFAR list includes the world’s most exciting and unexpected cities, regions, and countries to plan a trip right now. We’re truly honored to be one of just seven U.S. cities to earn this recognition and excited to keep sharing everything that makes Birmingham a remarkable place to visit, live, and experience.
