The Most Prestigious Recognition of Civic Pride, Leadership and Progress in the Seven-County Birmingham Region

This program recognizes citizens who exemplify civic pride, leadership and progress just as Vulcan has symbolized for 119 years. Five outstanding citizens will receive “The Vulcan” award for community commitment, initiatives or heroism that have or will have a significant impact on the quality of life in the region.

The Birmingham Region is defined as the seven counties included in the Birmingham Metropolitan area: Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby and Walker.

Nominating Process – Nominations are accepted online from the general public until July 31, 2024. The nominator does not have to be a resident of the seven-county area.

Selection Committee –  A formal committee responsible for interpreting and enforcing the criteria and eligibility as detailed below.  The group includes at least 10 and no more than 15 individuals selected by the members of the steering committee and/or event co-chairs.

Eligibility

  • There is no time limitation or expiration on activities considered for a Vulcan Award
  • Nominee must have been a resident in the seven-county Birmingham metro area during the time the award was earned
  • Actions for which nominees are considered may have taken place outside of the seven-county metro area, although it must be extraordinary
  • No minimum age for eligibility
  • Nominee must be of good character
  • Nominee must be considered a source of pride within the Birmingham region
  • Nominees may be nominated more than once

Award Criteria

An honoree should exhibit Vulcan-like attributes such as optimism, innovation, endurance, forerunner, persistence, proud yet humble, strength, selflessness, survivor, team player, visionary.

Hero: Susann Montgomery Clark of The Megan Montgomery Domestic Violence Prevention Fund

Game Changer: Josephine Lowery of College Choice Foundation

Servant Leadership: Kelly Greene of Food For Our Journey

Awards Categories

Lifetime Achievement Award

Awarded in recognition of a lifetime “body of work” demonstrating a Vulcan-like contribution to the betterment of the region, in public, private or charitable activities. *May be awarded posthumously.

Hero Award

Awarded in recognition of heroic acts that have demonstrated selflessness in the face of perceived insurmountable odds and has made a significant difference in the lives of others.

Servant Leadership Award

Awarded in recognition of selfless service to others in the Birmingham region. *Not limited to individuals in faith-based and not-for-profit organizations, but for anyone who, like Vulcan, has stood for the community by serving others.

Game Changer Award

Awarded in recognition of leadership in innovative project/projects that have made or is/are likely to positively impact the region.
