2024 Honorees

Vulcan Park Foundation is pleased to announce the 2024 honorees for the annual Vulcans Community Awards.

New this year, to commemorate multiple milestones, Vulcan Park Foundation has created three additional awards to honor lifetime achievement and dedication to Vulcan Park Foundation’s mission. We are excited to recognize the following exceptional honorees this year:

Vulcan Legacy Builder Award: Mr. Stewart Dansby

Mr. Dansby will be celebrated for his 20+ years of momentous contributions to Vulcan Park Foundation. His dedication has created a lasting and meaningful imprint locally, regionally, and nationally, ensuring a legacy that will inspire future generations.

Vulcan Community Champion Award: The Kiwanis Club of Birmingham

The Kiwanis Club of Birmingham will be honored for their outstanding commitment and significant contributions to Vulcan Park Foundation. Their advocacy and impact have been pivotal in preserving the beloved Vulcan statue and continuing the beautification of our scenic park.

Vulcan Spirit Award: Mr. C. Phillip McWane

Mr. McWane will be acknowledged for his unwavering dedication and loyalty to the preservation of Vulcan Park and Museum. His commitment to protecting Vulcan’s place as the iconic symbol of Birmingham and the region represents Vulcan’s own strength and perseverance over 120 years.

Lifetime Achievement: Gerald Watkins

Gerald Watkins will be honored for his unwavering dedication to the preservation and revitalization of Rickwood Field. His leadership has brought major events, including the return of the Rickwood Classic and a Major League Baseball event, to Birmingham. Through his efforts, Rickwood Field has become a cultural landmark, enriching the city’s history and enhancing its visibility as a destination.

Hero: Daniel Chaplin

Daniel Chaplin is being honored for his tireless advocacy on behalf of the Down syndrome community. Despite personal challenges, Daniel has demonstrated remarkable courage and selflessness, advocating for inclusion, medical research, and legal changes at the local, state, and national levels. His work has influenced significant legislation, including the Trisomy 21 Research Act and the ABLE Act. Daniel’s unwavering dedication, leadership, and commitment to improving the lives of others have made him a true hero and role model for all.

Game Changer: Martin Juarez

Martin Juarez is being honored for his groundbreaking work with PD Fight Club, a unique boxing program helping people with Parkinson’s Disease improve motor skills, balance, and mobility. Combining his passion for boxing with a commitment to health, Martin has created Alabama’s first program of its kind, now serving 150 participants weekly. His dedication has transformed lives, offering not only physical benefits but also a supportive community for those battling Parkinson’s, setting new standards in health and wellness programs.

Servant Leadership: Melinda MeGahee

Melinda MeGahee is recognized for her tireless dedication to transforming the lives of women through The Lovelady Center, which she co-founded in 2004. As Executive Director, she has helped over 14,000 women transition from prison, providing rehabilitation, education, and spiritual guidance. Her compassionate leadership and commitment to excellence empower women to overcome addiction and rebuild their lives. Melinda’s impact and heart for service exemplify true servant leadership, making her a beacon of hope for many.
