The Most Prestigious Recognition of Civic Pride, Leadership and Progress in the Seven-County Birmingham Region

Award Name: The Vulcans Community Awards

Purpose: To recognize and celebrate citizens who embody the spirit of civic pride, leadership, and progress, akin to the symbolism of Vulcan, over its 120-year history. And to honor dedicated, long term Community Champions of Vulcan Park and Museum’s mission. The award, named “The Vulcan,” honors outstanding individuals for their community commitment, initiatives, or heroism that significantly impact the quality of life in the Birmingham Region.  

When:   Wednesday, November 6, 2024
5:30pm – 8:30pm

Where:   The Club
1 Robert Smith Drive, Birmingham, 35209

Eligibility Criteria:

  • No time limitation or expiration on activities considered for a Vulcan Award.
  • Nominee must have been a resident in the seven-county Birmingham metro area during the time the award-worthy activities were undertaken.  These counties include Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby, and Walker.
  • No minimum age for eligibility.
  • Nominee must possess good character.
  • Nominee must be considered a source of pride within the Birmingham region.
  • Nominee may be nominated more than once.
  • An honoree should exhibit Vulcan-like attributes, including optimism, innovation, endurance, persistence, pride yet humility, strength, selflessness, team player, and visionary.

Nominating Process:

      • Nominations are accepted online from the general public.
      • The deadline for nominations is June 30, 2024.
      • The nominator does not have to be a resident of the seven-county area.
      • Application must be completed in full for nomination to be accepted.

Selection Committee:

  • A formal committee is responsible for interpreting and enforcing the criteria and eligibility.
  • Selection committee members are selected by representatives of the Steering committee.
  • The Selection committee ensures a thorough evaluation of nominees based on established criteria.

Timeline:

  • Nominations accepted until June 30, 2024.
  • The selection committee reviews nominations and makes decisions by July 26, 2024
  • Recipients will be notified by August 1, 2024.  Interviews, photos, and videos to follow. 

Awards Categories

Lifetime Achievement Award

Awarded in recognition of a lifetime “body of work” demonstrating a Vulcan-like contribution to the betterment of the region, in public, private or charitable activities. *May be awarded posthumously.

Hero Award

Awarded in recognition of heroic acts that have demonstrated selflessness in the face of perceived insurmountable odds and has made a significant difference in the lives of others.

Servant Leadership Award

Awarded in recognition of selfless service to others in the Birmingham region. *Not limited to individuals in faith-based and not-for-profit organizations, but for anyone who, like Vulcan, has stood for the community by serving others.
